International conference "Social Diversity, Development and Stability: The Role of Context"

NES Center for the Study of Diversity and Social Interactions and Center for Research in Economic Development (CRED) of the University of Namur organize the international conference addressed to the questions of how and under what circumstances social diversity becomes a problem for development and stability, and how the underlying dynamic works, in particular, the feedback effect on institutions.

The effects of social diversity on economic growth and political stability appear to be context-dependent. They are shaped not only by the economic, demographic, and technological environment but also by government policies (think of migration policies, for example), and the prevailing rules or institutions, political institutions, in particular. In turn, the institutions themselves can be modified under the stress of social cleavages and antagonisms, ultimately leading to nasty politico-economic equilibria.

Among the speakers are David D. Laitin (Stanford), James D. Fearon (Stanford), Ruben Enikolopov (NES), Jean-Philippe Platteau (Namur), Shlomo Weber (NES).

Conference Programme

The conference takes place in Moscow, at Azimut Hotel Smolenskaya on October 4 and 5, 2019.
